Located within Sydney’s Northern Beaches, the home’s Hawaiianinspired name was drawn from its generous front verandah, a gesture shaped by connection to nature and the surrounding gardens. Designed with light, air and a seamless relationship to the outdoors in mind, Lanai unfolds effortlessly to the landscape. Each space opens to welcome coastal breezes, allowing the home to breathe with its environment and reflect a relaxed, beachside way of living grounded in calm and connection.
A seamless dialogue between tropical coastal textures and midcentury modern influences unfolds throughout, expressed through tactile materiality, sculptural forms, and a palette that evokes both warmth and ease. The result is a residence that feels effortlessly transportive, forming a design narrative entirely unique to Lanai.
Working within the home’s existing footprint, the design celebrates its original 1970s architectural features. Elegant cornices and sweeping arches were retained and elevated, ensuring the home did not conform to a typical coastal aesthetic, but instead expressed a more layered and timeless character. Materiality plays a central role, with timber, bamboo and ceramic tiles forming an earthy palette that references and refines the home’s original textures. Warm sunset tones, reminiscent of long beach days, bring depth and softness to the interiors allowing the spaces to feel grounded in their heritage, while being thoughtfully refreshed for contemporary living.
Clearing away the layers of overgrown greenery redefined the home’s street presence, revealing a refreshed façade that feels open, bright, and uniquely coastal. The transformation draws on a distinctly Palm Beach aesthetic, green louvred shutters, sculptural palms, and a crisp white exterior. Decorative fretwork and French doors bring a layer of architectural craftsmanship, honouring the home’s heritage while reimagining it through a modern, tropical-coastal lens.
A colour palette of rich browns, luscious pinks and warm neutrals was used to create a cohesive connection between the kitchen, living and dining spaces. The considered use of colour and texture, expressed through layered art, styling and furnishings, ensured that Lanai exudes character and personality without compromising the timeless materials forming the foundation of the palette.
With an existing landscape abundant in tropical palms and lush greenery, we had strong foundations to work with at Lanai. The landscape design focused on enhancing these natural elements while elevating the pool and BBQ areas to create a cohesive and inviting outdoor retreat.
